eGovernment Accessibility toolkit
Gian Wild was responsible for writing the eGovernment Accessibility Toolkit for use by Victorian Governments and Departments, commissioned by Multimedia Victoria. Gian initially wrote and then updated this toolkit. This toolkit covers the basics of accessibility to detailing how to make web sites accessible and how to test for accessibility compliance. The toolkit deals with how people with disabilities access the web, with focus on adaptive technologies and browser requirements.
Gian is currently updating the eGovernment Accessibility Toolkit to Level AA status and is writing new sections on top issues such as:

W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Working Group
Gian Wild was an Invited Expert of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group from 2000 to 2006. During this time she attended weekly two hour teleconferences and infrequent face-to-face meetings. She contributed to the both the writing and design of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Version 2.0.
WCAG Samurai Errata Peer Review
The WCAG Samurai Errata is an alternative to both WCAG1 and WCAG2, written by Joe Clark and other unknown accessibility specialists. Gian was invited to write a peer review of the WCAG Samurai Errata when it was first released.
Office for Disability
Gian Wild reviewed the wireframes and then design of the OFD web site, DiVine, as well as consulted on the use of accessible Content Management Systems. A design document was provided. Accessibility issues raised included reviewing colour contrast, simplified language, navigation labels and skip links.
WISE Accessibility Audit
Gian Wild completed a Level AAA accessibility audit of the WISE Employment site in January 2009.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade Accessibility Audit
Gian Wild completed a Level A accessibility audit of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade web site in February 2009.
FullCode Press Accessibility Judge 2007
Gian Wild was one of two accessibility judges for the FullCodePress, build a web site in a day.
McFarlane Award Judge 2007
Gian Wild was the accessibility judge for the McFarlane Award in 2007, presented annually at the Web Directions South conference.
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
Gian Wild was contracted to the (DEECD) Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to review the Web Development Toolkit. Tasks included writing the following guidelines and checklists:

- Audio descriptions
Gian worked closely with the Online Services Unit to update the toolkit and include references not only to accessibility but to other Whole of Victorian Government Web Standards as well. Gian was responsible for writing a Recommendations document on how OSU could improve uptake of accessibility and other requirements by areas of DEECD which included new procedures, raising awareness and providing specialised testing services.
Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games
Gian Wild was the Accessibility Specialist for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games web site for over two years and was responsible for the site’s redevelopment in July 2004. In October and November 2004 Gian undertook a major project with Commonwealth Games to develop a competition schedule and a series of ticketing tables to AAA level. The tables were tested for colour contrast, all given header labels and were tested by a person with a screen reader. Further work consisted of auditing the web site at crucial points during and up to the Commonwealth Games, including advice on accessibility complaints. Reports were provided and training was conducted on how to write accessible content.
Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development
Gian Wild tested the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (DIIRD) Corporate web site and Business Vic for Level A compliance both during the design and template phase of the two sites. On completion of the two web sites, Gian conducted testing of the site using a variety of automated testing tools, accessibility guidelines, technical environments and adaptive technologies. Gian worked closely with developers and the project manager to ensure that the fixes were completed in a timely and efficient fashion.
Live in Victoria - Department for Victorian Communities
Gian Wild worked as the Accessibility Specialist during the build of the Live in Victoria web site. Gian worked closely with the assigned design team to ensure that concepts for the Live in Victoria web site complied with accessibility guidelines. She then completed accessibility testing on this project, including a design evaluation of the Live in Victoria original concept and accessibility training of the developers working on the CMS. Gian conducted training of DVC (DOI) Content Authors and Developers on the maintenance of accessible content. Documentation was provided on how to maintain accessible images, links and text. The site complies with W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 1.0, Level AA. Several additional accessibility features were included in the site, including captioned video, text size changer and alternative language versions of the site.
YouthCentral - Department for Victorian Communities
Gian Wild worked as the Accessibility Specialist during the build of the YouthCentral web site. The site complies with W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 1.0, Level AA. The site was also tested for use on a slow modem, various operating systems and browsers, and on a mobile phone.
Department of Premier and Cabinet
Gian Wild completed a Level A audit of the Department of Premier and Cabinet web site and Intranet. Several major security issues were identified through accessibility testing. Gian worked both on-site and off-site to address these and other issues.
Microsoft
Gian Wild ran a one day accessible development training session for Microsoft developers and testers. The course covered why accessibility is important as well as detailed steps on how to comply with every Level A checkpoint.
Ticketmaster7
Gian Wild ran a one day accessible development training session for Ticketmaster7 developers followed by a half day course on specific fixes to accessibility errors found in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games ticketing application. The initial course covered why accessibility is important as well as detailed steps on how to comply with every Level A checkpoint. The second course covered specific areas of non-compliance, including labeling of fields, indicating mandatory fields and the provision of detailed instructions. Specific fixes were developed in response to an audit of the ticketing application and testing by a vision impaired person.
Brisbane City Council
Gian Wild worked with the Brisbane City Council to develop an appropriate training schedule for BCC staff. This schedule included three seminars aimed at different staff.
Seminar One: Accessibility Basics
This seminar attracted over 70 staff and was aimed at people with little or no understanding of accessibility. The intention of the seminar was to raise awareness of accessibility throughout the organisation.
Seminar Two: Devising an Accessibility Policy
This seminar was run for upper management to provide structure to the development of an Accessibility Policy for Brisbane City Council.
Seminar Three: Accessible Development
This training session was run twice for both developers of the Our Brisbane and BCC web sites. It covered a range of accessibility issues, however concentrated on Level A checkpoints. The training session ran for one day and detailed how to comply with Level A Guidelines.
In addition to training, Gian Wild also developed a Disability Reference Group within the council, which consisted of people with disabilities that could review products and sites for accessibility compliance.
Department of Human Services - Disability Online
Disability Online is a portal to all disability information in Victoria, owned by the Department of Human Services that was launched on the 1st July 2002. The site provides high-level information to people with disabilities and their carers as well as acting as a channel to further resources. This site can be viewed at www.disability.vic.gov.au.
Accessibility testing of the Content Management System
Gian Wild completed accessibility testing of the CMS (Lotus Notes) used for this project to ensure content created was compliant to the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Level AAA. As a result, a variety of site searches were included in the final design.
Accessibility design
Gian Wild worked closely with the assigned design team, The Here Collective, to ensure that concepts for the Disability Online web site complied with AAA-level accessibility guidelines.
Accessibility compliance of site development
Gian Wild completed accessibility testing on this project, including a design evaluation of the Disability Online original concept and accessibility training of the developers working on the Disability Online CMS.
Accessibility content training
Gian Wild conducted training of Disability Online Content Developers on the maintenance of accessible content. Documentation was provided on how to maintain accessible images, links and text.
